REVIEW: Ruby Bouzioti unleashes her metal goddess vocals upon Within Temptation's 'The Reckoning'
Within Temptation certainly need no introduction, but today it is all about Ruby Bouzioti! The Athens based singer is continuing her ‘Cover Sessions’ series with Within Temptation’s The Reckoning.
Bouzioti’s passion for singing stems back to aged 13 for the local choir. However, she ended up joining her first band Vault of Acanthus in 2014, she later kickstarted her YouTube channel where she collaborated with many Greek musicians. Since then she has worked as an independent singer for many Greek rock and metal bands and has even delved into voice acting.
The original version of ‘The Reckoning’ has a distinct combination of synth and metal, with Sharon den Adel and Jacoby Shaddix killing it on the vocals. But can Bouzioti live up to the original?
Bouzioti does a great job of capturing the same essence of the original with a slightly heavier introduction which may appeal to more metal or rock fans. Combined with her Greek accent, this does make the song feel different to the original, which is great as the cover does not come across as a direct copy. Personally, I love a cover where the artist puts their own spin on the track and makes it their own. Big examples for me are Nirvana’s iconic cover of David Bowie’s ‘The Man Who Sold The World’, and Marilyn Manson’s cover of Eurythmics’ ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of this)’.
Bouzioti has an attractive vocal style, it is elegant and enchanting whilst effortlessly placing an exotic tone onto the track. As The Reckoning hits the chorus, you certainly get a feel for Bouzioti’s vocal power, you can see why she’s popular amongst metal bands. I particularly love the contrast between her softer and feather light vocals and how they can transform into the metal goddess vocals. Bouzioti is undoubtedly talented!
Bouzioti manages to capture the essence of the original track which recently became associated with WWE wrestler The Undertaker’s retirement tribute. I do wish Bouzioti really mixed about with the track to put her own spin on it, however her vocals are captivating enough to deliver a good cover!
Is it better than the original? That is up to you to decide.
